Volunteer of the Month

Magda Mendez is a PS 102 alumnus with a seemingly unlimited supply of energy and love to give back to her alma mater. She is a big part of every PTA event and is extremely busy this fall as she chairs the upcoming PTA/Scholastic Book Fair (which includes the BOGO event in May), she  chaired the school picture committee and is consistently one of the school’s top sellers for the candy sale. Magda is a Learning Leader who works hard in the school every day on the growing Scoop up A Good Book! display (which features artwork and written reviews of our students’ favorite books), as a classroom volunteer, and as a frequent trip chaperone.  Magda works calmly and quietly and makes all that hard work look easy and fun – and she does it in 4” heels!  She is an enthusiastic supporter of the school and attends most workshops and activities with her sons, Alfred and Alex. If you are not already fortunate to know this wonderful woman - you can meet her when you come to shop at the Book Fair on November 14-16th! - Please take a moment to say THANK YOU Magda!

SAVE THE DATE!   - UFT WORKSHOP ON TESTING: DECEMBER 1ST at 6:00 p.m.

Teach your child how to balance school, activities

Over-scheduling has become a problem for children today. Between school, sports, music lessons and clubs, kids don’t get a break. And parents spend more time shuffling children around than building a good relationship.

The key is to balance schoolwork, outside activities, family time and free time. Here’s how:

  • Cut down on the number of different activities. Instead, allow your child to explore two activities in depth.
  • Decrease the overall amount of time your child spends on planned activities. Give her more free time to play and explore on her own.
  • Don’t put pressure on your child when she’s playing sports or practicing music. Getting upset about a missed pass or wrong note won’t allow your child to enjoy the activity.
  • Spend more time with your child. Let her just “hang out” and talk to you. Have a family night once a month to build family relationships.

NOVEMBER QUOTE:

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."

                                    John Fitzgerald Kennedy

Each November we celebrate Thanksgiving by getting together with family and friends and eating a lot.   When I was a kid, before we could eat, we went around the table and had to say what we were thankful for.  I quickly said “dinner” or “mom” or anything to get my turn over with, a little embarrassed to state the obvious – it was easy - I had so much to be thankful for. The day before Thanksgiving was spent packing and delivering food to less fortunate families. It was harder to spend the day packing food into brown paper bags and meeting and thinking about people who couldn’t afford to buy dinner, who were ill, or who were alone for the holiday.  But helping these people every year taught us to live with gratitude and be satisfied with what we had.

Thanks Mom and Dad!
