Volunteer of the Month

Elizabeth Maldonado loves books. You may have met her while checking out books at the Bay Ridge library where she worked before it closed for renovation.  Liz always comes out to volunteer at the Scholastic book fair as well as other PTA events such as the craft fair, plant sale and bake sale.  This lovely and loving mom has served as PTA Treasurer and even though she is now working full time (at a bookstore!) she continues to act as PTA Corresponding secretary  - a job that includes maintaining the PTA mailing list and arranging the holiday and end-of-year luncheons. Liz also has a great intellectual curiosity and doesn’t miss many workshops or opportunities to learn something new.  She is a friendly and open person and enthusiastically supports any project involving the arts.  This year, her husband, Ray, will join PS 102 as a Learning Leader.  Thanks to both of you, and to Ethan for sharing your wonderful parents!

Text Box: Are you part of the team?
Studies show that kids learn best when the school and parents work as a team. Answer yes or no to see if you and the school are acting as teammates:
__1. I have met my child’s teacher. I plan to attend parent-teacher conferences.
__2. We have a regular time and place for doing homework.
__3. My child enjoys learning activities outside of school, such as music, sports and reading.
__4. I support the school in its efforts to teach my child to be responsible and respectful.
__5. I talk to my child about the importance of education and of working hard in school.
How did you score?
Each yes answer means you’re building a strong partnership with your child’s school. That will help your child excel.

THANKS! To the P.S. 102 Beach Clean-Up TEAM!

19 students, 17 parents, Ms. Grillo, Ms. Perrone and Ms. Weitz joined Mrs. Willie and I for a morning of hard (but fun) work at the Broad Channel Bridge in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.  We collected over two pick-up truckloads full of garbage.  For photos and more information – see http://schools.nycenet.edu/region7/ps102

THANKS! To all the parents who attended curriculum day on Sept. 29th.  If you missed this chance to learn more about the work your child will be doing this year, call the teacher to make an appointment, or visit the Lightspan Network, for NYS standards for each grade level.  (link from our school web site.)

CONGRATULATIONS! To Jeremy Huml of Class 2-202 for winning first prize for boys in his age group in the RAGAMUFFIN PARADE COSTUME CONTEST.  He was a crowd pleaser and displayed enormous strength in pulling a dinosaur (and baby) all those blocks!  It was a great event and PS 102 made a terrific showing in numbers, creativity and school spirit.

OCTOBER QUOTE:

“If there is any one secret of success, it lies in the ability to get the other person’s point of view and see things from that person’s angle as well as from your own.”

                                                                      ...Henry Ford

We all want our children to succeed academically and socially in their years at PS 102. One important way to do this is to take time to establish open and friendly communication with your child’s teacher and other school staff members.  Most importantly –talk positively with your child about schoolwork, friendships and activities.  As parents, we are often surprised to find that the child we are sure we know at home can act very differently for the baby-sitter or the teacher, or among friends. Try to be open to how others view your child, it will help you make more informed decisions. Remember to share your knowledge of your child and your child’s concerns with the teacher.
