BAY VIEW PARENT NEWS

October 2004 – 1/1

Welcome!

Your parent coordinator, Margaret Sheri, and PTA President, Anna Hom, are pleased to introduce the first issue of Bay View Parent News, which will hi-light parent involvement opportunities in the school and inform you of school and community events as well as learning and social opportunities for your child and family.  Parents are always welcome to contact either of us with questions and concerns – in person, by dropping a note in our mailbox in the main office, by email or phone. Anna Hom maintains an email list and sends out regular updates on PTA activities and Margaret Sheri maintains the PS 102 Web Site - where we will post the School Calendar & Bay View Parent News each month as well as the student newspaper - What’s Up at Bay View.  We welcome any feedback and suggestions on improving communication and information for PS 102 parents.

Mrs. Dovi and the staff of PS 102 are very thankful for the many generous parent volunteers who make PS 102 a great place to learn and grow.  I would like to thank all the new Learning Leader trainees who attended our first training session and the many Learning Leaders who are coming back for a 2nd, 3rd…. even 6th year!  We are also lucky to have a growing list of volunteer translators.  Thank you all for answering the call for volunteers made in my September letter.  If I haven’t called you yet – I will soon J.  We had a great turnout at the Ragamuffin Parade on Saturday October 2nd…. Thanks to all the creative students, parents and teachers who made this year’s parade such a fun one!

---Margaret Sheri, Parent Coordinator

Volunteer of the Month - October

Sue Caputo has been volunteering at PS 102 since her son’s first day of Kindergarten. She has been a huge part of almost every PTA event for the last three years and this year is chairing the Pumpkin Patch, Bake Sale, and Craft Fair.  Upon completing Learning Leader training last year, Sue also began working one day a week as a classroom helper in Ms. Rawson’s class.  You can find Sue at the front door during drop-off and the bridge door at afternoon pick-up where she directs traffic and often steps in to translate for Spanish-speaking children and parents.  Sue is also a cub-scout leader for her son’s troop. Sue’s motto is “anything for the children.”  If you get a chance to meet this wonderful parent, say “THANKS SUE!”

FYI:

SCHOOL LUNCH MENU

School menus are posted in the lobby each month. They are also posted on the following website (we are Brooklyn II): www.opt-osfns.org   Menus are 95% accurate - on occasion substitutions are necessary.  Children can buy a hot lunch on a daily basis for $1.50.   Please be sure to complete the school lunch forms and return them to your child’s teacher ASAP to see if your child is eligible for free or reduced price lunch.  If your child is not interested in hot lunch, the form is still very important as it affects federal and state funding for all NYC public schools.

Well, we are going to try!  PTA members have met to plan family school spirit events each month.  The first event will be a Halloween Film Night on October 22nd – look for a flier in your child’s backpack soon.  We are also planning for a Family Sports Night with Camp Olympia staff, and have ideas for art/craft nights, a skating party and more.  If you have any ideas – please share them with us.
