Volunteer of the Month

While you were out… one of our hard-working parent volunteers was researching and planning PTA assemblies for the new school year.  Theresa Ferraioli has been a dedicated and very active member of the PTA for the last four years – chairing the book sale, assembly committee and the plant sale.  This year she will also co-chair the Candy Sale  - our largest school fundraiser. Theresa welcomes new parents to the PTA with her wonderful warm smile and friendly manner.  She also has an amazing ability to remember names!  She is an integral part of most every PTA event and attends Executive Committee meetings faithfully.  In addition to her PTA activities, Theresa has been a Learning Leader for 4 years, volunteers for hearing and vision screening, and is our parent artist-in-residence -- her work includes the Statue of Liberty in the main entrance, and the “Scoop Up a Good Book” display at the front stairs.  When you see this wonderful and talented lady – please give her a big THANK YOU!

NEW RESOURCE:

PS 102 has purchased a subscription to the Parents Make a Difference newsletter which offers practical ideas for elementary school parents to help their children in academic and social areas, discipline and child development.  Four articles a month will appear on our school web-site: www.schools.nycenet.edu/region7/ps102/parentarticles

and a limited number of copies of the full newsletter will be available in English and Spanish at the parent information table in the lobby each month.  Here’s a short sample! You can also order their semi-monthly e-letter at www.parent-institute.com/parent and receive inspirational articles on the challenges and rewards of parenting.

Text Box: Encouraging Writing
Have fun with descriptive words
Here’s a fun way to help your child use descriptive words. Write an “accordion sentence.” It’s a sentence that can be expanded, word by word.
Start with a short sentence: “The cat lay by the window.”
Then take turns adding one word at a time. For example:
·	The yellow cat lay by the window.
·	The fat yellow cat lay by the window.
·	The fat yellow cat lay by the sunny window.

SEPTEMBER QUOTE:

One cannot collect all the beautiful shells on the beach. One can collect only a few, and they are more beautiful if they are few.

Anne Morrow Lindbergh

I hope you all had a wonderful summer and collected a few beautiful memories to cherish for years to come.  I think back on my own childhood and remember the two lazy summer weeks at my grandmother’s lake house each year with my family as the best times of my childhood. And so after working at the PS 104 summer school program, my daughter and I headed to the mountains of New York State for camping, hiking, reading, swimming and kayaking on a lake. I return rested and refreshed and ready to start a new school year.  The school year gets busy – and my job here is to involve parents in supporting their child’s education – but before we get into all that busy-ness– I suggest we all make a commitment to spend quality free time together as families throughout the year.
