INTERNATIONAL BEACH CLEAN-UP : 9/15/07

While the weather started out drizzly and cold this year - we went ahead with the clean-up and over 40 intrepid volunteers did a fantastic job - documenting and collecting over 280 lbs. of garbage from the beach at Coney Island . We ended the day with sunshine. Thanks to all who helped this year, and to Michele DiBartolo, a former PS 102 parent, for being an excellent Beach Captain. We hope you will join us in 2008!

INTERNATIONAL BEACH CLEAN-UP : 9/16/06

Members of the 2006 PS 102 Beach Clean-Up Team (those who lasted to the end!)

PC, Margaret Sheri greets the PS 102 Team. Our Team Captain, Michele DiBartolo and husband Mel, are on the right - ready to give instructions on the clean-up. We picked up over 250 lbs. of garbage from the Coney Island Beach stretching from W8th Street to W 19th. It was a beautiful sunny day! The aim of the clean-up is not just to clean the beach - we recorded each item picked up and gave the records to the American-Littoral Society - the organization responsible for coordinating the Internatioanl Coastal Clean-Up in NYS. see: www.alsnyc.org for more info and statistics on what was found on our beaches and how you can get involved. They have great family trips and walks in the area too!

PS 102 Clean-Up TEAM!

On Saturday, September 17, 2005, 19 students, 17 parents and 5 staff members from P.S. 102 met at the North Channel Beach Bridge in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (part of the Gateway National Recreational Area) to participate in the 20th Annual International Coastal Clean-up.

The weather was warm and overcast and we all worked hard cleaning up the VERY MESSY beach from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Our team cleaned up over two pick-up trucks full of garbage! Participants received a PS 102 baseball cap, as well as a certificate and a frisbee from the park rangers. This event was a lot of fun and we hope to do it again at a beach nearer (and in Brooklyn!) next September.

The American Littoral Society organized the clean-up in the New York area. Visit their web site to learn more about other beach-related activities, the coastal environment, the clean-up and the impact it has on environmental education and policy.
