SPECIAL PROGRAMS AT P.S. 102
P.S. 102 offers many special programs for children at all grade levels, find out more below!

Reader of the Month Awards

Each month, every teacher at P.S. 102 chooses one student to be "Reader of the Month." The children have their pictures taken for the bulletin board in the school lobby and receive special certificates at an award ceremony at the PTA general meeting later in the month.

HeartShare One World After School Program

In the fall of 2001 HeartShare Human Services of New York was awarded one of the seven One World After School Programs to be operated in Community School District 20. The new after school programs to be housed in District 20 are a result of the collaborative effort between The After School Corporation, The Department of Education, District 20 and HeartShare Human Services of New York.

What is the program about?

Children who participate in the HeartShare One World After School Program receive a snack everyday (provided by the Department of Education) and 45 minutes worth of homework help. The children follow a set schedule that indicates where they need to be at any given time. For example, a group may go from snack time, to homework time, to arts and crafts. Because we are a "one world program", the children explore various cultures in an attempt to increase education and tolerance.

Who staffs the program?

The program’s Site Coordinator is Nada Arkadan; the Assistant Site Coordinator is Maya Zantout. The program is staffed by college students, many of whom are majoring in education, graduates awaiting teacher certification and DOE paraprofessionals. Rigorous training hours are required from all staff members as per DOH guidelines. All staff members are CPR certified and many are also First Aid and Safety certified.

What activities are offered by the program?

This year, the children will participate in the following classes: dance, arts and crafts, writing, reading, science and math. soccer, earth and environment, as well as a comic book project. Our partners for this year are The Cultural After-School Adventure, who are working on this year's "Broadway" theme, and Young Dancers in Repertory.

Unique Minds School Program

The Unique Minds School Program is an exciting addition to the regular curriculum. The goal of the UMSP curriculum is to create caring, connected, classrooms that support learning. This is done by teaching students the skills necessary to pay attention and stay on track in class, problem solve, understand feelings, recognize and manage stress, resolve conflict, appreciate uniqueness, develop personal responsibility, set goals, and develop study strategies that work best for them.

Please stop by the Unique Minds Bulletin Board in the main entrance lobby to get a flavor of some of the activities.

American Heart Association Fundraiser

During the month of February, our students participate in the American Heart Association's annual fundraiser. This year we joined the Hoops for Heart campaign. During physical education classes, the students learned the skills necessary to participate in this event. Children had a great time while learning to give to others. They also learned that exercise is very important in maintaining a healthy heart. This year, 2008, our school raised $ 4242.00
