P. S. 160K's population consists of approximately 750 students encompassing Prekindergarten through Grade 5, of which 87 percent speak a language other than English at home. Presently there is one Federally Funded Super Start Prekindergarten Program consisting of 36 students, one Chinese Bilingual Kindergarten class, and there are four Title I English as a Second Language positions. The languages spoken include, but are not limited to, Chinese, Spanish, Urdu, Albanian, Arabic, Polish, Russian, Bengali, Turkish, Vietnamese, Hindi, Gujarati, and Romanian. The school is currently serviced by three Title I Reading teachers and a Resource Room teacher.

In addition to the regular classroom teachers, there are cluster teachers who provide instruction in the areas of Music, Art, Science, Library Media, Social Studies, Computer and Test Taking Skills. Pull out services are provided by specialty teachers in the areas of ESL, Reading, Reading Recovery, Resource Room, Guidance and Speech services for students who have demonstrated a need in each of the above mentioned areas. Special academic and extracurricular programs at P.S. 160K include Project Read, Literacy Academy, Project Arts, Cross-Age Peer Tutoring, Peer Reading Program (older children read their published works to early childhood students), School Newspaper, Glee Club, Opera Company, Band, Student Technical Staff, School Crossing Guard, and a Monitor Squad.

The classes of P.S. 160K are grouped heterogeneously in Grades Kindergarten through 5. The Kindergarten students are taught reading through a Theme Based Whole Language approach. The classroom environments are print rich and child orientated. As a result of the creative efforts of their teachers, children are involved in many reading and writing activities.

For the 2000-2001 school year, P.S. 160K has acquired a grant in order to implement The America's Choice Comprehensive School Reform Design. The staff is learning how to analyze student performance in English Language Arts against the Chancellor's New Standards Performance Standards and evaluate the curriculum based on how it fits with these New Standards. There is an emphasis on phonics, oral language, guided reading and writing, and independent reading and writing. Students functioning below level will be given immediate intervention to enable them to catch up quickly. An America's Choice Leadership Team has been formed in order to involve parents in the support of and partnership in the education of their children.
