                    Book of the Month
October 1999

"Where the Wild Things Are"  by Maurice Sendak

Wild Things Bulletin Board done by Mrs. S's children in First Grade.
Why did Mr. Marano choose this book?

The reason why I've chosen this book is because of its highly imaginative theme.  Every child imagines monsters in some way.  The character in the story, "Max", imagines he sees monsters who are ominous and scary, yet they have a docile spirit.  They seem like nothing more than huge teddy bears.  Max has all these "wild things" under his command.

"The Legend of the Blue Bonnet"
                           by Tomie  DePaola

Why did Mr. Marano choose this book?

Since November is a time where we honor the Native Americans, I thought that this story would best highlight their culture.  It is a very sensitive story about one girl's unselfish act and her respect for her family.  Read this book and see if you can find the miracle which saves a generation of people.
