e-mail: jmiele2@nyc.rr.com      jmiele2@nyc.rr.com

My name is Joel A. Miele Sr. and I attended P.S. 199 from Kindergarten
through the sixth grade. I graduated in 1946 and continued at Seth Low JHS
leaving there for Brooklyn Technical High School in February of 1948. I
graduated from the 3 year College Preparatory Course in February of 1952 and
went on to the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now Polytechnic
University) to study civil engineering and graduated in June 1955 with a
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.

I then went to work as an engineer for my father's architectural firm
and, in 1957, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy and went to Officer Candidate
School. After OCS I was commissioned an Ensign in the Civil Engineer Corps
and served over three years on active duty. In 1960 I left active service
(but remained active in the Naval Reserve and NY Naval Militia), became
licensed by New York State as a Professional Engineer and returned to work
at the family (now) architectural & engineering firm. I eventually became
the senior partner in that firm where I worked with my brother, Jean Miele,
who also attended P.S. 199 graduating four years after I did.

In July 1990 I was appointed Commissioner of the New York City Planning
Commission and served there until February 1994 when Mayor Giuliani
appointed me Commissioner of the NYC Department of Buildings. In August 1996
Mayor Giuliani appointed me Commissioner of the NYC Department of
Environmental Protection where I served until July 2002 when Mayor Bloomberg
appointed me Commissioner of the NYC Board of Standards & Appeals where I am
currently serving.

As a community-involved person I am President of Peninsula Hospital
Center, Peninsula General Extended Care Facility and the International
Parkinson Fund of the Netherlands; Executive Vice President of the American
Parkinson Disease Association and the Queens Council of the Boy Scouts of
America; and Past President of the NY State Society of Professional
Engineers and the Queensborough Public Library.

I am now retired from the Navy as a Captain; from the NY State Naval
Militia as a Rear Admiral; and from the family architectural & engineering
firm, Miele Associates.

I live in Howard Beach, NY with my wife Josephine (Cottone) Miele and we
enjoy our three children Joel Jr., VitaMarie and Janet and the seven
grandchildren hey have given us.

I learned of this web site when I served as Principal for a Day at P.S.
199 in April 2003. The school still looks the same except for the
enlargement.

Mr. Wachtel was principal when I attended P.S. 199.

I remember my teachers somewhat fuzzily as:

1st Grade: Mrs. Miller
2nd Grade: Mrs. Futterman (who I saw again just before moving in 1992).
3rd Grade: Mrs. Goldstein / Mr. Weinstein
4th Grade: Mrs. Human
5th Grade: Mr. Kaplan, who taught me the multiplication tables
6th Grade: Mrs. Schwartz

After graduating PS 199, I attended Hudde JHS then Edward R. Murrow HS,
graduating in 1980. I continued on to New York City Technical College, CUNY,
earning two AAS degrees in 1982 and 1984. Those degrees are in Hotel
Technology and Data Processing, respectively.

I am a network engineer with almost two decades of corporate computer
experience; over 11 years of that on Wall Street. I lost the best job I ever
had after 9/11, with the general downsizing that occurred due to the attack
and the downturn in the financial markets.

In 1992, I moved from Midwood to Sheepshead Bay when the family home was
sold and my parents retired to Hazelton, PA.

My sister, Diana Newman, attended PS 199 two years after I did. She is now
Dyana Cohen and lives in Harrisburg, PA. She is married and has two boys,
Andrew and Zachary (she wanted boys from A to Z!).

Both my Mom, Shirley Newman -- who passed away in April -- and my sister
were active in the NYC Public School system while still in New York.
My sister now works for the Harrisburg School system.

My current profession, job: I am a writer and a musician and work
as a publicist and webmaster at an independent bookseller.
Other information: P.S. 199 was a wonderful school. My teachers,
including Mrs. Royceman and Mr. Jack Pepper were integral to my
development and I made wonderful friends there. There were also some
memorable moments, like arriving at school when I was in Mrs. Schwartz's
5th/6thj grade bridge class to find our classroom had burnt down! I was
a door monitor there and a crossing guard at E. 12th St. and Ave. N. A
wonderful place.

Went to college in New Hampshire- taught for three years at P.S.255 in
Brooklyn and then we moved to New Jersey.
Have four grown children and grandchildren
we moved to Florida in 1983 and I resumed teaching.
Many of the fabulous teachers at 199 had an effect on my career- I remember
Mrs. Duberstein (who I know passed away)-Mrs Murtha ( if you are around I
know you will remember me) and Bertha Savad who had both my sister and me as students.
I remember the following people who I'd love to hear from:

       After I left P.S. 199: Hudde JHS-Brooklyn Tech HS-CCNY (Civil
Engineering)-Polytechnic Institute of NY. Civil Engineer and Marketing Specialist

My current profession, job: Two positions: Head of Transportation
and Marketing for Paragon Associates in Sayreville, NJ, and owner of The
Success Academy, a marketing consulting firm
             duties include: Oversee all transportation-related
production for the engineering firm and business development. For TSA, I
run a marketing-advertising/copywriting and corporate training firm.

       Other information:
From birth until I was 16, I lived on East 13 St. between Ave K & L
(opposite the house where Chris Stein lived...he is the boyfriend of
Debbie Harry of Blondie). I had relatives on the block until two years
ago. Moved to NJ in 1992 (for 14 years I lived near Church and McDonald
Avenue and for eight years in Canarsie).

I will attribute PS 199 and a great teaching staff who helped me develop
basic life skills...not just the 3 R's. Paraphrasing the chief of the
Iron Chef TV show..."If memory serves me right..." my teachers and
administration staff were:
1959-1960: Kindergarden: Mrs. Maley (later she remarried and was Mrs. Milder)
1960-1961: First Grade: First, Mrs. Clothe, then Mrs. Bogaslav (a very
nice lady I used to see occasionally when she lived across the street
from Hudde)
1961-1962: Second Grade: Mrs. Greene (who I was terrified of...but made
sure I learned my stuff!)
1962-1963: Third Grade: Mrs. Caplan (this is one year I may not have
correct...but her face is in my mind right now. Nice lady)
1963-1964: Fourth Grade: Miss Martha Doyle (looking back, she had a bit
of a resemblence to Julia Child). Strong personality, but I was a bit of
a teacher's pet to her, but I knew not to get out of line with her. I
remember she took us on several field trips, such as to the original
Brooklyn Children's Museum in Crown Heights, The Sailors' Maritime home
in the area now near City Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (I
remember pamplets we bought about their Egyptian and Chinese
collections, and our lunch). She always showed off Catholic churches
that we passed on the trips, my first exposure to other religions. I
wish we could be in touch...I sensed she had big asperations for me.
1964-1965: Fifth Grade: Mrs. Grace Martin (another nice lady...easy
going and made learning interesting)
1965-1966: Sixth Grade: Again, Miss Martha Doyle.
Principal: George Becker
Asst. Principal: Fred Wachtel
Music Teacher: Mrs. Landers (who lived around the corner from me on
Avenue L)
Librarian: Mrs. Lyons (although I didn't use the school library much as
my teachers did not offer "study hours"... I used the Midwood Library on
E. 16th St. by Ave. J very often...to this day I am a "Friend of the
South Brunswick Library" due to my love of books I have developed from
those early experiences.

Memories:

I was a AAA monitor, assigned to the corridor where the eraser cleaning
machine was, under a girl supervisor named Ellen (whose father died
during the school years, my first exposure to a death so close to a
schoolmate).

My mother worked as an aide to the teacher of the handicapped children
(Mrs. Gerri Lable). She was a friend to my mother outside of school.

Another memory of Chris Stein: somewhere in his house, he had a
chainmail armor suit, probably from an overseas or historical war. He
brought it around the many classes in a form of show and tell.

One fun thing I especially enjoyed were the slidestrip presentations,
keyed by a tone on an accompanying record. One in particular was of the
Firebird Suite.

The day I graduated in June of 1966, I had my last Cookieburger platter
at Cookies at E. 16 St and Ave. M.

My older cousin, Marietta Beim, who lived one block from me, also went
to PS 199. She now is a CPA in Morris County, NJ.

One bit of a negative memory is that I was the typical "outcast" kid who
was picked on quite a bit. But it made me much stronger as an adult and
in hindsight, I learned much about life and interpersonal relationships.
But go tell that to a sensative seven year old.

Kids I grew up with (give or take a year) that I would like to say hi! to:

        Robert Riemer
        Marc Sidenworm
        Fred Zwieg
        Michael Rosensweig
Gregory Koller (a past good friend and fellow Dave Clark Five fan)
        Sharry Lipson
        Elaine Levy
        Anthony DeMeglio
        Richard Harris
        Richard Taub
        Ellen Chernoff
        Dave Chernock
Debby Young (who I knew better from Hudde)
Holly Lapiroff (who later in my 20's I dated shortly)
        Sherry Berka
        Ed Gross
        Randy Martin
Michelle Sonenblum (one of my first crushes)
        Ina Sorens
Steve Lorber (another big comic book collector like me)
        Howard Callender (ditto)
        Debby Munz
        Mark Weinberg
        Cathy Larson

Other memories...going into the Straus store near Christmas/Chanukah to
see the new toys (and smell of the tires), climbing up the staircase on
the Chestnut Street embankment, adjacent to the Brighton train, to the
site of the former South Greenfield platform of the Long Island Railroad
(the railroad used to be twice as wide until 1937 when a branch of the
Long Island Railroad ran just east of the current D/Q tracks, where the
houses on E. 16 Street are now). Until Murrow High School was built,
there was a repair shop for Olsmobile and a Sanitation Department truck
garage on Chestnut Street by E. 16 Street. I used to get very close to
the trains to watch the old QT and QB go by.

I remember the fear I had when the oral polio vaccine was
distributed...I was afraid I was going to get a shot by the school nurse
until she gave me a sugar cube with a red dot of liquid on it...what a relief.

And now, to pass the torch, my twin three-year old girls, Sarah (the
lawyer) and Marissa (the doctor), started Preschool (what we used to
call Nursery School) yesterday. Just think of two adorable girls dressed
in identical red jackets, with white hoods and red "Pooh" backpacks,
holding hands with Mommy (my wife, Cindy) and their new teacher, Mrs.
Girsky, as they walked into school for the first day of a long school
career. And the memories of my doing the same thing 41 years ago
(Kindergarden, not Preschool) at PS 199 came right back to me. I
remember my first day...my mother let me play in the little playground
on the E. 12th St side of courtyard...before the teachers came out to
great us, have us form lines and march in...to a school career that
didn't end until 1983...with a Masters Degree in Transportation and
Planning. And now I see my kids continue this tradition.

Such naches (blessings). Where did the time go? Unfortunately, my kids
won't experience the stickball and stoopball played on E. 13th Street.
Phil's grocery and Angie's restaurant at Elm and E. 12th (and where I
had my first cheeseburger). Who can forget Angie's great greasy fries
served in a paper cone and Phil's heros and the wax candy he sold in
bottle caps, and the candy dots on paper strips? Now my kids have
Barney, the Dinosaur. We had Barney, but he came with Betty, Fred and
Wilma (in PS 199, Bamm Bamm and Pebble weren't even around yet). They
have Burt and Ernie. We had Burt and Harry (Piels) (aka Bob and Ray).
They have the overpriced Sesame Place. We had Freedomland, Palisades
Amusement Park, Steeplechase and two years of the World's Fair. They
have Blue's Clues. We had Mrs. Joan on Romper Room. They have play
dates. We just played. They have "Explorations". We explored. My kids
won't take the subway to high school. They will take a bus to the
Township high school (all two floors of it). Brooklyn Tech had eight. I
rode the Coney Island Avenue trolley and took the Church Avenue trolley
where it went under Ocean Parkway. My kids won't see the trolley buses
on Cortelyou Road, or the other lines on Flushing Avenue and elsewhere.
But they will ride new trolleys on our Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line and
perhaps soon on the trolley museum under contruction in Red Hook. They
won't get a ticket to record their food purchases at Dubrows on Kings
Highway (remember the mural?...and the lucksun koogle with the hot
cherry sauce...Ah Machayah!). I don't get suits anymore at Simon
Ackerman, Charles or Robert Hall, but my kids can shop at any one of
many factory outlets. Although we're Jewish, who knew what a falafel was
back in the days of the Ashkinazy-based culture? Girls had Bas Mitzvahs,
not Bat Mitzvahs. We had Shobbas, not Shobbat. A different culture. Oy.

And shopping at John's Bargain Store on Ave. J, next to the Dime Savings
Bank, for toys and school supplies (when we didn't get what Mommy wanted
at Cheap Charlie's on J between 12th and 13th.). And remember, we got
our first bankbook for a deposit of 15 cents in PS 199's effort to teach
us to save, and each week, handing a dime to the teacher, who
subsequently deposited it in the Manufacture's Hanover Trust branch at
Ave. J opposite the Brighton train station.

And to bring PS 199's memories to a head, my kids brought back a list of
school services. The South Brunswick lunch program offers a half pint of
milk for 40 cents if not bought as part of the full $1.55 lunch program.
Every day, my mother made sure I had FIVE CENTS for a PINT of milk, and
Two cents for a pretzel stick. (Remember the fellow who sold the best
twisted pretzels from a stick he carried in traffic at Kings Highway and
Linden Boulevard...three for a quarter or a dime each)? And God Forbid
the current school system should offer such a high-salt carbohydrate
treat as a pretzel stick today!

I remember showing off the first clad dime (January 1965) to kids in the
PS 199 auditorium...and once getting my hand stuck between the seat and
the seatback in the auditorium (of course, wearing the regulation white
shirt, black pants and tie that resembled a 1" strip of cloth overlapped
over the opposing end, with a mother-of-pearl-covered snap on it)...the
custodian had to come and unscrew the seatback to release my hand. Boy,
was I developing a memory that lasts to today.

And everyone who went to PS 199 got their school supplies (NO LOOSE LEAF
NOTEBOOKS UNTIL FIFTH GRADE...a true sign of growing up when you could
use one) at the five and ten on Kings Highway between E. 14-15 Streets,
at Estroffs on Ave M (who never liked kids) and the toy store just
beyond E. 19 St on Kings Highway. Or how about at Silver Rod?

And seeing bandleader Mitch Miller walking on Ave M after filming his TV
show at the NBC studio (he used to tell the neighborhood kids he went
into the A&P to get yogurt...it was good for his beard).

All happy memories being a student at PS 199. Even if I did get picked
on.

And hi, Mrs. Boguslav. Please eMail me if you can at successacademy@home.com.

The graduates of 1947 spent their tenure during the war years, which made our
experience unique. We helped the war effort by planting "Victory Gardens",
collecting scrap metal and paper, rubber, etc (often from merchants on
Avenue M)., and buying savings bonds. Many of us kept maps on our walls to
follow the direction of the war. At school we had air raid drills. Many of
the teachers had husbands in the service (e.g. Julia Rafkin). There were
shortages of everything but no one complained.
Teachers included Savad, Rafkin, Murtha, Beebe, Waterman, O'Brien and Erhardt.
It was a time to pull together and all of us still remember that special experience.
