Cultural Enrichment through the Arts, taught by Ms. Eleanor Petty, supports the Social Studies curriculum by developing critical thinking skills and encouraging written expression and analysis of ideas. All students in grades 1 through 5 take part in this program. The program was designed to provide enrichment activities in music, art, poetry and literature. It supplements the reading program by introducing a wide range of genres and author studies and by allowing opportunities for creative expression.
Project Arts
The goal of our Arts Education Program is the implementation of the Learning Standards for the Arts into our arts curriculum, thus allowing students to give meaning to the cultures of their world. Our program, coordinated by Ms. Enola Jung, integrates the arts into the core curriculum through a variety of instructional initiatives and partnerships with the cultural community. Each of the students in grades k through 5 are involved in the arts experience during the school year through visual dramatic and performing arts. This year our program partners have included American Ballroom Dancing, Broadway Theater Institute, Young Dancers in Repertoire and Young Audiences.
Band and Chorus
Fourth and Fifth Grade students are involved with the Chorus under the direction of Mr. Eric Kivnick, or the band, under the direction of Ms. Zhou. They have performed in the District 20 Annual Drug & Alcohol Abuse Prevention Fair, The Annual Winter Concert and The Annual Spring Concert at PS 48.
Art
Children the opportunity for self expression
in the Art Room. There, Ms. Jung shares the experience of working
with various mediums, studying styles of expression and learning art history.
From dinosaurs to Mondrian, from drawing to sculpture, and realism to pointillism,
our students' integrated curriculum extends throughout their studies.
