Goals of Instruction
Mathematics instruction has
four main goals:
To teach students the basic mathematical skills needed to succeed in their
chosen professions;
To prepare students for college level courses;
To develop the logical thinking skills associated with mathematical methods
of inquiry.
To develop an appreciation of mathematics, its multicultural heritage,
and its impact on our everyday lives.
Student Placement
On the basis of our placement test, student record, standardized tests,
and teacher/ counselor recommendations, students are placed in mathematics
levels suitable to their skill levels. Students falling below state determined
standards must be given remedial courses. Students are encouraged to take
higher level math courses once they have reached the appropriate proficiency.
Diploma Requirements
All students are required to pass six terms of mathematics in order to
earn a NYS and NYC diploma. All students entering on and after September,
1997 will be required to score an appropriate grade on a Regents examination.
