Goals of Instruction
Science instruction has five main goals:
To teach students the scientific principles they will need to succeed
in their chosen professions;
To prepare students for college level science courses;
To develop the logical thinking skills associated with scientific methods
of inquiry;
To develop an appreciation of science, its multicultural heritage, and
its impact on our everyday lives.
To prepare students for the technology of the 21st Century.
Sequence of Courses
9th Year: One of the following courses:
Regents Living Enviornment
Regents Earth Science
Regents Physics
10th Year: One of following courses:
Regents Earth Science
Regents Physics
AP Biology
We expect 9th and 10th year offerings to be modified in 1999 when new
Regents courses are scheduled to be made available.
Most students will take their third year of science in the 12th year.
Some may be able to do so in the 11th year. The following advanced courses
will be available:
Regents Biology
Regents Chemistry
Regents Physics
We hope to be able to also offer a course in Textile Science in the near
future.
Student Placement
On the basis of student records, standardized test, and teacher/counselor recommendations, students are placed in science classes suitable to their skill levels. Students who fail the required science examination will be given remediation. To permit all students the opportunity to succeed in higher level science classes, pupils may move into higher level courses once they have demonstrated proficiency.
Diploma Requirements
All students are required to pass six terms of science in order to earn
a NYS and NYC diploma.
