Merchandise
Presentation is one of the core courses offered to students who
are pursuing a career major in visual merchandising. Materials and
activities in this course will teach the elements of merchandise
presentation, expand their knowledge of the field of visual merchandising
and provide a foundation for additional courses in the sequence.
As students progress through the course, they will be introduced
to visual merchandising terminology and participate in many hands-on
activities which will reinforce the concepts introduced and help
them achieve the learning competencies.
The
course content covers a wide range of concepts and competencies
that provide a foundation for further studies in visual merchandising.
In addition to the activities and projects indicated, the teacher
may include any kind of hands-on activities that will enable students
to achieve the performance objectives.
POINT
OF PURCHASE DESIGN
Point
of Purchase Design (P-O-P) introduces students pursuing a career
major in visual merchandising11th year visual merchandising to the
various types of P-O-P advertising. Through visual investigation
students will gain an initial understanding of a variety of P-O-P
units, with specific emphasis placed on floor life. The course investigates
the origins of P-O-P and traces its development to its present form.
Students will learn the basic forms of P-O-P and progress through
a series of coordinated and more advanced projects to the stage
where they will see how these units are best utilized in today’s
diverse retail environment.
Various elements
and concepts of P-O-P design will be introduced, and related topics
such as client needs, time and budgetary restraints, and product
placement, will be considered. A variety of P-O-P publications and
industry websites will be used to obtain P-O-P samples.
Store
Planning and Design
Store
Planning and Design is designed to familiarize the student with
the basic theories, practices, and understanding of what is involved
in creating or renovating a physical space for the purpose of marketing.
Students will learn how to read, understand and draw a professional
floor plan, and they will be exposed to a variety of factors that
contribute to the process. These will include, but are not limited
to, topics such as: client wishes, needs and priorities; target
groups; product knowledge; diverse forms of competition and customer
base.
The student completing this course will be able to:
• read and understand a floor plan.
• draw a basic floor plan.
• incorporate skills to create a basic store renovation.
• present ideas to peers and/or invited guests in a professional
manner.
Various elements
and concepts of store design will be introduced. Budgetary restraint,
product resources, cost estimating, fixturing, signing and graphics,
security and safety considerations, and display and presentation
requirements will be covered. Students will also learn how to communicate
their idea or design to the client through the use of simplified
visuals such as floor plans, elevations, story boards, and isometric
renderings.
WINDOW
DISPLAY AND EXHIBITION DESIGN
Window
Display and Exhibition Design is a course designed as a practicum
to immerse the student in a professional retail environment where
previously learned skills can be practically applied on a daily
basis. Students will obtain practical experience by planning and
executing displays for six exterior windows and ten interior windows
at the High School of Fashion Industries.
Through
our industry contacts, students gain additional professional experience
by planning and executing exhibits for the display industries trade
show and a neighborhood store.
Our
industry partner PAVE (Partnership for Visual Education) assists
us with internships and exhibition space at trade shows.
